So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. (Romans 14:12–13)
Everyone longs to be loved. We are to extend love towards others, rather than resorting to judgment or condemnation. Often we find ourselves criticizing people who don’t conform to our standards or to prove that we are superior. We may even begin to spread exaggerated tales about these individuals to others, a practice known in the Philippines as “Marites” (master of arts in relaying information through exaggerated storytelling).
When we become overly critical, we risk dampening their spirit and ultimately missing their hearts. We lose sight of sharing Jesus with them. Our aim should be to nurture and develop others, rather than tear them down. We mirror the patience and love that Jesus demonstrated. We should be gentle, not critical, especially to those who are weak. Let’s foster growth, not to instigate destruction. When we uplift others, it benefits not just them or us, but the entire community. It contributes to building a community bound by love for Jesus.
Who do you find yourself criticizing or judging for values and beliefs that are different to your own? How can you ask the Holy Spirit today to grow the fruit of love, patience, and gentleness in your dealings with them?
I am chosen to bless, not to break.
Anointed to love, not to hate.
My words shall heal, not harm.
My hands shall lift, not push down.
I speak life—for I belong to Christ.
Lord, teach me to love like You do. Help me respond with gentleness, patience, and grace—even when it’s easier to judge. Let my words build up, not tear down, and let my life reflect Your mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
